ARUP Employee Donor Program 

ARUP Blood Services is a division of ARUP Laboratories and welcomes employees to donate whole blood, platelets, and AB plasma. We host regular blood drives on-site at varied times to accommodate A- and B-week schedules, making it easy to find time to donate.

How often can I donate?

• Whole blood: Every 56 days (up to 6 times per year)
• Platelets: Every 10 days, but we recommend waiting at least 14 days (up to 23 times per year)
• AB plasma: Every 29 days (up to 12 times per year)

How much PTO will I earn?

ARUP employees can earn paid time off (PTO) when they donate outside of their working hours. The amount of PTO earned depends on the type of donation:

• Whole blood: 2 hours of PTO
• Platelets or AB plasma: 4 hours of PTO
  • Platelet donations can take up to two hours, so please plan accordingly.

Any PTO awarded for donating will be available in Kronos the month following your donation.

Bonus PTO Days

ARUP Blood Services offers bonus days throughout the year to encourage whole blood donations or to ask that donors with certain blood types give on specific dates.

How bonus days work:

• Bonus days will be announced in advance so employees can plan ahead.
• Employees who donate whole blood on a designated bonus day will receive an additional 2 hours of PTO on top of the standard PTO benefit for whole blood donations.

Important Notes

• PTO earned from donating blood will expire on December 31 each year, won’t roll over into the following year, and cannot be cashed out.
  • Exception: If you donate in December, the PTO from those donations will be available in January of the following year.
• The maximum amount of PTO an employee can earn from donating blood is 24 hours per calendar year.
• PTO is awarded only for employee donations—not for donations made by spouses or dependents.
• Donating on the clock requires supervisor approval and disqualifies you from earning PTO. Please do not submit PTO forms for on-the-clock donations.
• Nonexempt and exempt employees can use their PTO from donating blood just like regular PTO.
  • Hourly, part-time, and seven-on/seven-off employees may take PTO in small increments (e.g., one hour).
  • Salaried employees must use PTO in full-day increments and donate outside their scheduled hours (e.g., weekends, holidays, and evenings).
• PRN employees are not eligible to earn PTO from donating blood.
